Each subclass of IgG has distinct properties that allow them to combat different types of infections.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 2-10 days
  • Age: 18+

This test measures the total level of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and the four main subclasses of IgG in a blood sample. Immunoglobulins are antibodies produced by the body's immune system to target and eliminate foreign objects such as viruses and bacteria. Immunoglobulin G is the most abundant type of antibody in the blood. There are four subclasses of IgG: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4. Each subclass of IgG has distinct properties that allow them to combat different types of infections. Measuring IgG subclasses is typically done to help determine if someone has any IgG deficiency. Immunodeficiency can make people more susceptible to certain types of diseases or infections. An IgG subclass test can provide more information than a regular total IgG blood test. People with IgG subclass deficiency may suffer from chronic infections or have difficulty fighting off certain ones even when their total IgG levels appear normal.
