Serum measurements are useful in the diagnosis of iron deficiency and hemochromatosis.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 1-4 days
  • Age: 18+

An iron deficiency can lead to anemia, with symptoms that include weakness, leg pain, chronic fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. Too much iron can damage the liver, heart, and pancreas. Iron overload symptoms include joint pain, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weakness. This test is generally ordered after a patient receives abnormal results from a Complete Blood Count (CBC) test or if he/she exhibits symptoms of iron deficiency or overload. This test requires 8 hours of fasting prior to specimen collection.

The patient should be fasting 9-12 hours prior to collection and collection should be done in the morning.
