C-Reactive Protein High-Sensitivity (hs-CRP) Blood Test is done to evaluate risk for heart disease.

What is this test?

This high-sensitivity test measures even very low levels of C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in the blood. CRP levels increase due to inflammation, and can be used to detect systemic infections or to monitor cardiovascular health. Testing for CRP in the blood can also help detect or rule out certain autoimmune disorders.

CRP is produced by the liver, but abnormal levels of the protein are associated with inflammation, heart attack, and stroke. The hs-CRP test can also be used to screen for inflammation due to infection, and is often ordered in conjunction with other heart health tests. Oral contraceptives, menstruation, and pregnancy may affect CRP levels, so women may need to discuss the best time to take this test with their provider. There are no fasting requirements for this test.
