Frequently Asked Questions

The Cortisol Blood Test works by collecting a blood sample and measuring levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland. Cortisol helps regulate blood pressure, immune response, and even stress.

Your provider may order a blood test for cortisol to diagnose certain adrenal and pituitary gland conditions, such as Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, and adrenocortical insufficiency or hypersecretion.

Your provider may wish to order a Cortisol Blood Test if you’ve exhibited the following symptoms:

  • Abnormally high or low blood pressure
  • Sudden weight gain or loss
  • Purple abdominal streaks
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dark patches on the skin.

You cannot take a Cortisol Blood Test at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

Once you receive the results of your blood test for cortisol, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the results and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary.

Hormone levels tend to fluctuate with age. Changes in sleep patterns can also cause slight shifts in cortisol levels. However, significant changes in cortisol are often due to adrenal or pituitary gland problems.

There are no special requirements for the Cortisol Blood Test, though it is not recommended for people who are currently taking prednisone/prednisolone, due to cross-reactivity. Your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Cortisol Blood Test results typically take 2-3 business days to process.

The cost of a Cortisol Blood Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final — you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.
