  • Digital Report

Vitamin B12 and folate (also known as folic acid) are essential for cell division, DNA synthesis, and the formation of red blood cells.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 1-6 days
  • Age: 18+

Malnutrition and malabsorption (often due to infection, Celiac disease, or certain types of medication) can lead to vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies. People who lack B12 are at an increased risk for developing macrocytic anemia, while folate deficiency during pregnancy can cause problems during fetal development. This test generally requires 8-12 hours of fasting prior to sample collection. Some supplements, such as Biotin, can interfere with test results; please consult with your provider about any medications and supplements your are currently taking.

Fasting for 12 hours required. Stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection. Must draw before Schilling test, transfusions or B12 therapy is started.
