A fructosamine test helps to determine how well medications control blood sugar levels.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 3-9 days
  • Age: 18+

A fructosamine test measures average glucose (blood sugar) levels for the past 1-3 weeks. Fructosamine is a compound formed from the combination of glucose and protein. In some circumstances, this test can be more useful than a hemoglobin A1C test which measures average glucose levels for the past 2-3 months. A fructosamine test is often ordered when a person is beginning treatment or changing medications for diabetes to help determine how well their medication is controlling their blood sugar levels. This test is also sometimes ordered for pregnant diabetic women because blood sugar and other levels can fluctuate rapidly during pregnancy. A fructosamine test can also be useful for people who have conditions that will affect the accuracy of a hemoglobin A1C test such as hemolytic anemia.

No special preparation is required.
