Measuring the level of elastase in the stool can help determine if the pancreas is functioning properly.

This test measures the amount of elastase in a stool sample. Elastase is an enzyme made by a special tissue in the pancreas that helps break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates during digestion. It is a key part of your digestive process.

What is a Pancreatic Elastase Test?

The Pancreatic Elastase Test, also referred to as a fecal elastase test, works by collecting a stool (feces) sample and measuring the level of elastase within the sample to determine if the pancreas is functioning properly. In a healthy pancreas, elastase levels are noticeable in the stool. If little or no elastase is found, there may be a pancreatic insufficiency.

Why would my doctor order a Pancreatic Elastase Test?

Your provider may order this test to screen for pancreatic insufficiency, a condition where pancreatic enzyme production is so low, the body cannot digest food properly or absorb enough nutrients. This could be caused by pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, cystic fibrosis, or other factors. Normal levels of fecal elastase can help your doctor rule out some of these conditions.

When should I order a Pancreatic Elastase Test?

Your provider may wish to order a Pancreatic Elastase Test if you’ve exhibited symptoms of pancreatic insufficiency. These can include:

  • stomach cramps
  • bloating
  • malnutrition
  • unexplained weight loss
  • fatty, foul-smelling stool

You cannot take a Pancreatic Elastase at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

How do I read the results of the test?

Once you receive the results of your test, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the healthy ranges for pancreatic elastase in stool and help you develop the necessary treatment plan. You can get an online consultation with a vetted, highly rated doctor through Tripment Health to discuss whether your elastase levels fall within normal fecal elastase test results.

Do my results change with age?

Fecal elastase testing results can fluctuate, and can mean different things at different ages. In adults, pancreatic insufficiency is often a sign of chronic pancreatitis, a long-lasting inflammation of the pancreas. Chronic pancreatitis tends to get worse over time and can lead to permanent damage of the organ. In children, pancreatic insufficiency can be a sign of cystic fibrosis or Shwachman-Diamond syndrome.

What should I expect at my appointment?

To prepare for a Pancreatic Elastase Test, your provider will issue a specimen container and specific collection instructions. Pancreatic Elastase Tests are considered to be highly accurate, though they may be used in conjunction with a Fecal Fat Test for an even deeper analysis. Pancreatic Elastase Test results typically take 4-8 business days to process.

How much does a test cost?

The cost of a Pancreatic Elastase Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final – you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.
