Vitamin B1, or thiamine, is one of several B vitamins which the body uses in metabolism, energy production, and the healthy development of skin, bones, muscles, organs, and the nervous system. B Vitamins are taken in through a person's diet. Good sources of vitamin B1 include cereals, whole grains, potatoes, pork, seafood, nuts, and legumes. Deficiencies are rare but are typically associated with malnutrition, alcoholism, and malabsorption disorders such as celiac disease. Chronic B1 deficiency can affect the muscles, heart, and nervous system. B Vitamin toxicity is rare. This test is typically ordered when a person has symptoms of B Vitamin deficiency such as irritability, skin rash, fatigue, insomnia, numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, and sores on the lips or in the mouth.
