Frequently Asked Questions

The Amino Acid Blood Test works by collecting a blood sample and measuring the amounts of 30 amino acids in that sample. Nine of the amino acids your body requires are not produced internally, and must be derived from your diet — these are referred to as “essential amino acids.”

Your provider may order this test, sometimes also referred to as a plasma amino acids blood test, to screen for nutritional deficiencies, digestive issues, or metabolic disorders, or to use in conjunction with other tests to diagnose or rule out liver or kidney disease.

Your provider may wish to order an Amino Acid Blood Test if you’ve exhibited symptoms of amino acid deficiency, including:

  • lethargy
  • digestive issues
  • fertility issues
  • trouble concentrating
  • decreased immunity

You cannot take an Amino Acid Blood Test at home — a blood test for amino acid levels can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

Once you receive the results of your test, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the healthy ranges for specific amino acids, and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary. You can get an online consultation with a vetted, highly rated doctor through Tripment Health.

Certain amino acids, such as leucine, threonine, methionine, histidine, glycine, serine, and taurine, may decrease slightly with age in males. For women, it is more common for threonine and serine to decrease over time. Luckily, there is a blood test for amino acids that will help you determine whether or not your levels are within the healthy range. Healthy amino acid levels typically can be restored with changes to your diet, or the addition of supplements.

You do not have to do anything special to prepare for an Amino Acid Blood Test — no fasting is required. This test requires a blood draw, which is generally taken from a vein in the arm. Some patients may feel discomfort or minor pain at the site of injection. Amino Acid Blood Tests are considered to be highly accurate, though they may be used in conjunction with Amino Acid Urine Tests for an even deeper analysis. Amino Acid Blood Test results typically take 6-8 business days to process.

The cost of an Amino Acid Blood Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final – you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.

Tripment Health has partnered with nearly 7,000 lab test facilities across 48 states. Finding an Amino Acid Blood Test, current procedural technology (cpt) code 767, is easier than ever. Add the lab tests you need to your cart, then select a testing facility conveniently close to you.

Taking a supplement rich in essential amino acids has been shown to lower plasma triglycerides over time. Before taking an Amino Acid Blood Test, ask your doctor if the supplements you consume could interfere with the results.

A CBC does not include a detailed look at your amino acids levels.
