The Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) test may be used to determine G6PD deficiency. Deficiency in G6PD can make red blood cells more vulnerable to breaking apart. When the body cannot replace the destroyed red blood cells a condition known as hemolytic anemia can develop. G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder that can be passed from parents to children. This test is typically ordered when a person has symptoms such as jaundice, weakness, fatigue, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, or dark-colored urine which may be indicative of hemolytic anemia.
