Lamotrigine is a medication prescribed to prevent and control seizures and to treat bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine is usually taken together with other medications. Determining the appropriate dose is important because taking too much or too little of the drug may worsen the symptoms it should treat or cause other health complications. Overdosing can result in side effects which include dizziness, difficulty sleeping, headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash. Severe toxicity can cause loss of coordination, slurred speech, loss of balance, drowsiness, and coma. Blood testing for Lamotrigine may be ordered when a person starts taking it or if they change the dosage of any of their medications. People taking Lamotrigine who begin to experience any side effects of toxicity should consult their doctor immediately.
