This test is typically ordered by people who work with animals and have an occupational risk of exposure to rabies.

Also known as Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT), the Rabies Titer Blood test assesses a person’s immune response to rabies by evaluating antibody levels in the blood, and their capacity to neutralize the rabies virus. RFFIT is considered the benchmark test by both the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

What is a Rabies Titer Blood Test?

The Rabies Titer Blood Test works by diluting serum (the soluble component of blood that does not play a role in clotting), mixing it with the live rabies virus and tissue culture, and incubating the solution for a standard amount of time. Immunofluorescent staining of infected cells can then detect the levels of antibodies.

Why would my doctor order a Rabies Titer Blood Test?

Your provider may order this test if you have an occupational risk of exposure to rabies (such as working in a veterinary clinic, with wildlife control, or in a rabies virus lab, etc.). This test may also be ordered if you have been in contact with unfamiliar wildlife, or to measure the immune response post-rabies exposure.

When should I order a Rabies Titer Blood Test?

A Rabies Titer Blood test is ordered if you’ve been bitten or scratched by an animal that is suspected of having rabies or if you routinely handle animals that may be at risk for rabies.

You cannot take a Rabies Titer Blood Test at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

How do I read the results of the test?

Once you receive the results of your test, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the healthy ranges of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies in your body and recommend further testing, if necessary. You can get an online consultation with a vetted, highly rated doctor through Tripment Health.

What should I expect at my appointment?

There are no specific requirements to prepare for a Rabies Titer Blood test. Your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Since there are only two commercial laboratories approved by the Center for Disease Control to process this test, results can take up to 4 weeks.

How much does a test cost?

The cost of a human Rabies Titer Blood Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final – you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.

Where can I find an affordable Rabies Titer Blood Test near me?

Tripment Health has partnered with nearly 7,000 lab test facilities across 48 states. Finding a Rabies Titer Blood Test for humans, current procedural technology (cpt) code 5789, is easier than ever. No. By purchasing a blood panel, you will not be able to submit any claim, bill, or other request for reimbursement to any insurer, third-party payer, or Government health program. However, you can use your FSA or HSA card.

You will receive a payment confirmation email, then an additional email confirming your appointment details (type of test, time and location of appointment, and QR code). You will need to present your QR code to the testing facility in order to check in.

Once your test is complete, you will receive your results within 1-3 business days.

With a blood panel, you can establish your body’s baseline values for basic health measurements like cholesterol (total, triglycerides, HDL, LDL and total cholesterol/HDL ratio), glucose and hemoglobin A1c. Additionally, depending on the blood panel you choose, you will receive data on performance measurements such as Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Magnesium, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, and/or Testosterone.
