Low levels of beta carotene may indicate problems with the liver, malabsorption disorders, or other gastrointestinal issues.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 2-7 days
  • Age: 18+

Beta carotene is essential for vision, a healthy immune system, building bones and skin, and more. It breaks down to become Vitamin A, also known as retinol. Beta carotene is ingested through the foods we eat, and abnormally low levels can indicate a poor diet, problems with the digestive system, or several other disorders. Symptoms of a vitamin A deficiency include rashy skin, headache, and impaired vision. Too much beta carotene and vitamin A can also cause problems, including an increased risk of certain cancers, gastrointestinal problems, and birth defects during pregnancy.
