Measuring creatinine levels is a way of evaluating kidney function.

  • Sample Type: Urine, Blood
  • Results: 1-4 days
  • Age: 18+

This test measures creatinine levels in both the blood and a 24-hour urine sample. Results will provide measurements for serum creatinine, urine creatinine, 24-hour urine creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and creatinine clearance. Creatinine is a waste product produced by the breakdown of creatine in the muscles. Because creatinine is normally excreted from the body through the kidneys, measuring creatinine levels is a way of evaluating kidney function. The creatinine clearance test can help determine the rate at which blood is being carried to the kidneys, as well as how well the kidneys are filtering waste products like creatinine. EGFR is calculated based on a person's creatinine levels. It is an estimate of how much blood per minute is being filtered by the kidneys. A decline in kidney function causes lowered eGFR, which can lead to the buildup of waste products in the blood. The creatinine clearance test is typically ordered as a follow-up to abnormal results on tests such as Blood Creatinine, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), or Complete Urinalysis or when someone is experiencing symptoms of a kidney disorder. This test can also be used to monitor people with kidney disease or congestive heart failure.

You must take your lab order to the lab to obtain a proper specimen container before collection. No fasting required. Drink plenty of water before the clearance is begun, and continue good hydration throughout the clearance. Avoid cephalosporins. If possible, medications should be stopped beforehand. Check with physician before stopping any medications. Urinate at 8am and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine in 24-hour period, ending with final collection at 8am the next morning. Refrigerate the collected urine between all voidings or keep it in a cool place. Screw the lid on securely. Transport the specimen promptly to the laboratory. Container must be labeled with full name, date and time collection started, and date and time collection finished.
