The 2-hour postprandial glucose test may be used to screen for diabetes mellitus. This test measures blood sugar levels 2 hours after a normal meal. Typically, the body produces insulin to help transport sugar which a person takes in when they eat. If blood sugar levels are still abnormally high two hours after a meal it can mean that the body is not producing sufficient insulin which is indicative of diabetes. The 2-hour postprandial glucose test is often ordered when a person is experiencing symptoms of diabetes.

Test requires adequate meal 2 hours prior to going in for blood collection. Meal should be completed within 15-20 minutes.
