A Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) evaluates electrolyte balance and organ function, and is often used to screen for diabetes, liver disease, and kidney disease.

Used to assess organ function, measure electrolyte levels, and screen for a variety of diseases, the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel is a popular broad-screening test. This panel is often ordered during routine health exams, or as a diagnostic tool to find the root of liver, kidney, or metabolic diseases. It can also be used to monitor treatment of various liver and kidney conditions.

The CMP includes all the tests in the Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP), and several tests from the Liver Function Panel, and Renal Function Panel. Your provider will most likely ask you to fast for 8-12 hours before sample collection.

CMP tests used to evaluate kidney function include:

  • BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen)
  • Creatinine
  • BUN/Creatinine Ratio
  • Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
  • Calcium
  • Total Protein: Used to evaluate both liver and kidney function
  • Albumin: Used to evaluate both liver and kidney function

CMP tests used to evaluate liver function include:

  • Albumin/Globulin Ratio
  • Total Bilirubin
  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
  • Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
  • Total Protein: Used to evaluate both liver and kidney function
  • Albumin: Used to evaluate both liver and kidney function

Other tests in the CMP panel include:

  • Glucose
  • Total Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, and Carbon Dioxide (electrolytes)
  • Globulin

Fasting is typically required for this panel. Your provider may ask you to abstain from eating for 8-12 hours before the blood draw.
