This test helps to determine if a person has immunity to hepatitis B.

What is this test?

The hepatitis B surface antibody test helps to determine if a person has immunity to hepatitis B. It provides a quantitative numerical result for antibodies to hepatitis B. In addition to the antibody measurement, test results include a reference range to help determine if you are immune or not. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver. Hepatitis B is normally spread through bodily fluids including blood. Transmission of hepatitis B can occur through sexual contact. The virus can also be spread through other methods including contact with the blood or other fluids of a person with the virus, sharing needles during drug use, improperly sanitized tattoo or piercing equipment, and bites. A pregnant woman can spread the infection to her infant during childbirth. Most people in the United States are vaccinated against hepatitis B when they are infants or before entering school. How long a vaccination can provide immunity will vary from person to person. Some studies have shown that vaccines can protect for 10-30 years or longer. However, some people may need a booster later in life to ensure continued protection. Measuring antibody levels can help determine if someone is still immune. People who have had hepatitis B and recovered will also show protective antibodies. How long natural immunity to hepatitis B will last is undetermined. The hepatitis B surface antibody test is typically ordered by people who wish to know the status of their immunity for personal reasons or are required to present verification of their immune status.
