Knowing your blood type is vital in an emergency situation where you might need a blood transfusion. This test determines your blood type (A, B, AB, or O) and Rh factor (positive or negative).

What is this test?

Your blood type is based on which antigens, substances that dictate your immune response, are found on your red blood cells. Knowing your blood type is necessary before receiving a blood transfusion or organ donation, to ensure your body doesn't reject the new blood or organ. This test can also determine whether a pregnant woman and her fetus have a compatible Rh factor, as Rh factor incompatibility may lead to complications.

This test determines your blood type (A,B, AB, O) and your Rh factor. Your Rh factor describes whether you are positive or negative for a certain protein found on the surface of your red blood cells.

Frequently asked questions

The Blood Type Test works by collecting a blood sample and measuring the specific antigens and proteins that determine your blood type.

Your provider may order a Blood Type Test if you need surgery, are pregnant, want to donate blood, or have no existing record of your blood type.

It is crucial to know your blood type before certain surgeries, and before receiving any type of blood or organ transplant. If you receive a transplant from an incompatible blood type, your body's immune system will attack the new blood cells, which is a potentially fatal event.

You cannot take a Blood Type Test at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

Once you receive the results of your Blood Type Test for candida overgrowth, you will likely be able to read them without consulting with a doctor. If your red blood cells contain:

  •  the A antigen, you have Type A blood.
  • the B antigen, you have Type B blood.
  • neither A nor B antigen, you have Type O blood.
  • both A and B antigen, you have AB blood.

No. Your blood type will remain the same throughout your entire life.

There are no special requirements for the Blood Type Test. Your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Blood Type Test results typically take only 1-2 business days to process.

The cost of a Blood Type Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final — you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.
