He4, Ovarian Cancer Monitoring

  • CLIA Certified Labs
  • Best Price
  • Digital Report

HE4 is a common tumor marker for ovarian cancer. It can also be used to monitor how well a person is responding to treatment.

  • Sample Type: Blood
  • Results: 3-14 days
  • Age: 18+

A Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Blood Test measures levels of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in the blood. HE4 is produced by epithelial ovarian cancer cells, and is used as a marker for both ovarian and endometrial cancers. Epithelial ovarian cells are the cells that develop in the lining that surrounds the ovaries — about 90% of ovarian cancer cases are epithelial cancer.

No fasting is required. Patients should stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your provider may order this test to monitor epithelial ovarian cancer after treatment, to detect recurrence and disease progression, or to help determine an appropriate treatment plan. The HE4 test is not used for screening for cancer, since there are other types of cells in the body that also produce HE4. Presence of HE4 alone is not enough to diagnose cancer.

You may wish to order a Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Test if you’ve already been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, to monitor progression or response to treatment.

You cannot take a Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Test at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

Once you receive your HE4 Blood Test results, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the results of your HE4 levels, help you determine whether or not your HE4 levels are in the normal range, and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary.

A person's risk of developing ovarian cancer increases with age. About 90% of women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer are over 40 — most are women aged 60 or older. However, having a family history of breast or ovarian cancer can increase your risk of developing these diseases at a younger age.

To prepare for a Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Test, your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. HE4 tests are considered to be highly accurate, though they may be ordered along with a CA 15-3 lab test or other clinical evaluations for an even deeper analysis. HE4 test results typically take 3-7 business days to process.

The cost of a Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Test listed on Tripment Health is transparent and final – you will never be asked to pay additional fees at the testing facility, or receive a surprise bill down the road.

Tripment Health has partnered with nearly 7,000 lab test facilities across 48 states. Finding a Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4) Test, current procedural technology (cpt) code 16500, is easier than ever. Add the lab tests you need to your cart, then select a testing facility conveniently close to you.

Taking Biotin supplements can affect the results of a wide range of lab tests, including an HE4 test. Before you take this test, discuss with your doctor how Biotin can influence HE4 levels.

These numbers, and what they mean, can vary from patient to patient. It is important to have your results interpreted by a licensed medical professional who can provide a proper diagnosis based on more than one factor.
