The production of FSH and LH are part of a system that involves the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, and other hormones including estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone. When one or more of these components do not function properly it can cause infertility and other health issues. FSH and LH testing are often ordered by one or both partners when a couple is having difficulty conceiving. These tests can also be ordered by women who suspect they are entering menopause or are having irregular menstrual periods. Men who are suffering from decreased sex drive, loss of muscle mass, or low testosterone can also order these tests.

It is recommended that someone taking Biotin (also known as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R) stop consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
