This test is frequently ordered when a patient shows symptoms of iron deficiency or iron overload. It can also be ordered when patients exhibits low levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit, which can indicate anemia. Ferritin is found mostly in the spleen, bone marrow, liver, and skeletal muscles.

The Ferritin Blood Test works by collecting a blood sample and measuring ferritin levels in the blood. Ferritin levels correspond to the levels of iron in the body — abnormally high levels of ferritin indicate an iron overload, while low levels indicate an iron deficiency.

No fasting is required. Stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection.

Once you receive the results of your blood test for ferritin, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the results of your ferritin levels and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary.

While ferritin levels can decline slightly with advanced age, age-related inflammation can actually contribute to an increase in ferritin levels. A blood test for ferritin can help you determine if your levels are fluctuating due to an underlying condition.

There are no special requirements for the Ferritin Blood Test. Your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Ferritin Blood Test results typically take 1-3 business days to process.
