This panel measures levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in the blood.

A lipid panel is a common, routine test used to evaluate your cholesterol levels, and monitor changes in these levels from year to year. Cholesterol is necessary for the development of cells, tissues, and organs, as well as hormone production. However, high levels of cholesterol can lead to the build-up of plaque in blood vessels, which greatly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The Lipid panel includes the following tests:

  • Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) – Often referred to as “bad” cholesterol
  • High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) – Often referred to as “good” cholesterol
  • Triglycerides – Excess fats in the blood stream
  • Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) – High amounts of VLDL indicate a higher risk of heart disease
  • Total Cholesterol – A measurement of all types of cholesterol

Your provider may ask you to fast for 8-12 hours before sample collection.
