IgG antibodies are used to determine a current or past infection.

What is this test?

Candida is a yeast found in the body. It is typically found in small amounts that are kept under control by the immune system, but can spread to dangerous levels when a person takes antibiotics, or when their immune system is compromised. Candida infections are most often found in the mouth (Thrush), genitals (yeast infection), or GI tract. Infections can spread through sexual contact. Symptoms include itching, irritation, and/or white discharge in the genital area, and a yeast-like odor. This test looks specifically for IgG antibodies to determine current or past infection.

Frequently asked questions

The Candida IgG Blood Test works by collecting a blood sample and measuring levels of the IgG antibody in the blood. IgG antibodies can indicate a past or current infection, and can be detected years after an infection was treated.

Your provider may order a blood test for the candida IgG antibody to diagnose the overproduction of candida caused by either the disruption of healthy bacteria or a compromised immune system. Some factors may include pregnancy, antibiotic use, birth control pills, diabetes, immunosuppression, or HIV infection.

Your provider may wish to order a Candida IgG Blood Test if you’ve exhibited the following symptoms:

  • Oral thrush — candidiasis that develops in the mouth or throat
  • Yeast infection — candidiasis that develops in the vagina
  • Itching or irritated genitals
  • Fatigue
  • Sinus infections
  • Digestive issues

You cannot take a Candida IgG Blood Test at home — this test can only be administered by a medical professional at a licensed testing facility.

Once you receive the results of your blood test for candida overgrowth, you will need to consult with your provider. Only a medical professional can advise you on the results of your candida antibody levels and help you develop a treatment plan if necessary.

Age and lifestyle factors can contribute to common and repetitive candida infections. Thrush is commonly found in babies, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Sexual intercourse and breastfeeding can contribute to candida infections being passed back and forth between people of various ages. Broad spectrum antibiotics can also lead to candida infections to patients of any age. A blood test for candida overgrowth and infection can help you get repeated flare-ups under control.

There are no special requirements for the Candida IgG Blood Test. Your provider will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. Candida IgG Blood Test results typically take 2-5 business days to process.
